The Great Dictator

Le dictateur

Extrait du film avec un discours mémorable de Charlie Chaplin

Chaplin’s first dialogue picture, The Great Dictator (1940), was an act of defiance against German dictator Adolf Hitler and Nazism, filmed and released in the United States one year before the U.S. abandoned its policy of isolationism to enter World War II. Chaplin played the role of "Adenoid Hynkel" Dictator of Tomania. The film also showcased comedian Jack Oakie as "Benzino Napaloni", dictator of Bacteria. The Napaloni character was clearly a jab at Italian dictator Benito Mussolini and Fascism.

The film was seen as an act of courage in the political environment of the time.
